COTA to Operate Holiday Service Thursday in Recognition of Juneteenth
The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) will operate Holiday Service on Thursday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth. Operating on Holiday Service hours will allow many of our employees to take the time to celebrate with their families and friends. When COTA operates Holiday Service, transit lines operate on their Sunday schedules.
Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Originating in Texas when Union troops arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, and announced to 250,000 enslaved black people in the state they were free, the day has been observed every June 19 since. There are several events happening in and around Columbus on June 19 and subsequent days to commemorate America’s newest federal holiday. That includes a Juneteenth Commemoration on Thursday, June 19, at the King Arts Complex. Customers can take Lines 7 or 9 to the King Arts District to attend the commemoration.
Customers can also plan their trip on the Transit app or view Sunday timetables at COTA.com. COTA//Plus will only operate in South Columbus on Thursday. COTA Mainstream will also operate holiday/Sunday hours.
COTA’s Customer Care call center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. Customer Care can be reached at (614) 228-1776. The COTA Customer Experience Center, located at 33 N. High St., will be closed on Juneteenth and reopen on Friday, June 20, at 8 a.m.
COTA operates Holiday/Sunday Service on the following holidays throughout the year: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
