Safety and cleanliness are top of mind for both COTA customers and employees. In addition to mandatory masks, COTA has implemented a variety of sanitization protocols to ensure that your ride is as safe as possible. If you have questions about COTA cleanliness, then we have your answers!

How often does COTA clean my ride?

Safety is our No. 1 priority. That’s why COTA transit vehicles are cleaned multiple times throughout the day. In addition to nightly and daily sanitization, you’ll see our COTA street team out routinely sanitizing our entire fleet throughout the day.

“We’re trying to keep our customers safe from the pandemic,” says Andrew Riley from COTA’s vehicle maintenance department. “About every 10 or 15 minutes, I’m spraying all of the seats, the handrails [and] the driver’s area with Lysol. Every day, I get thank you’s all day long from customers.”

Once the transit vehicles are home for the night, they undergo another round of sanitization. Our team is working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every trip for our customers is as safe as possible.

How does COTA clean the vehicles?

We use state of the art technology to sanitize our fleet. In addition to routinely disinfecting every transit vehicle, COTA also obtained electro-static cleaning technology to use in the event of a positive COVID-19 test.

“We [also] introduced an antimicrobial solution application to all of our transit vehicles,” says Matthew Allison, Chief of Transit Operations at COTA. “Every vehicle received this application, and this creates a defense against microbes on our fleet. [It] can work up to one year. We’ll be renewing that and continuing to study the efficacy and effectiveness of that treatment.”

Most importantly, COTA’s sanitization procedures are constantly improving to keep pace with the most effective tools on the market.

Is my ride safe?

We take every measure to foster a safe environment on our transit vehicles for both our customers and frontline employees. That is why we are constantly exploring the most effective methods to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“I care about my customers. I care about my employees,” says Rick Dooley from COTA’s engineering and maintenance department. “We were one of the first transit organizations in the United States to start doing what we’re doing, and we’re going to continue that to keep our customers safe.”
